Director's Note: 30th Anniversary of Lawnmower Man Today!
Washington Post article from the past regarding my Director’s Cut, and a new Oral History of the film just published on Inverse.com
Hey it’s the 30th Anniversary of the release of Lawnmower Man TODAY, so I’m going to indulge in a couple posts of articles that are relevant to this day for me (and which we will address in our next podcast episode!)- One from the past, and one from the present that just came out- The first is a Washington Post article that came out when my Director’s Cut of LM was released 6 months after the theatrical release of the film, and caused a critical reassessment of the film- Although the theatrical release of the film was very commercially successful (one of the most successful indie films ever), the critical response was mixed to the theatrical cut that New Line Cinema (the film”s distributor) mandated me to do, which caused me to cut out a huge amount of character development in the first half of the film- I put it all back in the Director’s Cut, and this Washington Post article address that in a way that was a very important moment for me as a Storyteller- which is why I’m sharing it again now as part of my celebration of the 30th Anniversary of my strange little film!:
And if you’re going to watch (or rewatch) the film, definitely watch the Director’s Cut!
Now here’s the new Oral History of the film just published on Inverse.com:
